Michele Bullock will become the first woman to lead the Reserve Bank of Australia, replacing incumbent Philip Lowe following months of speculation about the governor's future.
Treasury secretary Steven Kennedy and Finance secretary Jenny Wilkinson were among the other top contenders.insisted the new governor could not come from the Treasury or Finance departmentsMr Dutton again suggested today those appointments would be "tainted" because of that history, and said a governor could not be "in the pocket of government".
This morning the prime minister and treasurer took aim at Mr Dutton for attempting to politicise the appointment despite the government consulting with the opposition."And to describe people of the calibre of Steven Kennedy and Jenny Wilkinson, who have advised both sides of politics in a frank and fearless and impeccable way ... it is not those two who are tainted."Ms Bullock, when her seven-year term begins, will become the ninth RBA governor.
That was a recommendation from an independent review of the RBA, which also called on the governor to hold a press conference after each rate decision.
