American Alex Michelsen defeats Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas in a surprising first-round upset at the Australian Open, setting up a favorable draw for top Australian hope Alex de Minaur.

Young American Alex Michelsen pulled off a stunning upset at the Australian Open, defeating Greek crowd favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round. This win opens a favorable path for top Australian hope Alex de Minaur, who was already the highest-ranked player in section two of the draw. De Minaur now has the potential to reach the quarter-finals without facing any players ranked in the top 18.

The highest-ranked player remaining in his section of the top half of the draw is Karen Khachenov, who he could potentially face no sooner than the round of 16. If the draw unfolds favorably, de Minaur could face defending champion and world No.1 Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals. The deciding fourth set was a thrilling battle, with Michelsen and Tsitsipas trading incredible winners and unforced errors. A costly double fault from Tsitsipas on break point in the ninth game proved to be the turning point. Michelsen served out the match 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to claim the biggest win of his young career.Michelsen's second-round opponent will be either Australian wildcard James McCabe or Spanish qualifier Martin Landaluce. Meanwhile, world No.1 Jannik Sinner begins his title defense against Chilean Nicolas Jarry later in the day session on Monday. The night session features two blockbuster matches: 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic against No.3 seed Carlos Alcaraz. De Minaur will face Dutch world No.84 Dotic van de Zandschulp in his Australian Open opener on Tuesday
