A regional NSW council decides to hold a by-election instead of using a cheaper countback system to replace a councillor who stepped down the day after being elected.
Councillor Alex Karavas and Des Kennedy voted for a by-election.The Mid-Western Regional Council will spend up to $250,000 on a by-election to replace an elected councillor.
The Mid-Western Regional Council has voted to conduct a by-election to replace Labor Party councillor Sharelle Fellows, who stepped down due to health complications last month, just a day after being elected.The Mid-Western Regional Council will now hold a by-election.Mudgee Mayor Des Kennedy said the decision "was the fairest thing for the community" at the start of a four-year term."Whoever ran second or missed out, they can run again if they are confident in their ability.
The council's other option would have been to ask the New South Wales Electoral Commission to conduct a countback, which would see a redistribution of the votes cast for the councillor creating the vacancy.
