Shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie says he is “worried” the fighting between Israel and Hamas could ignite a broader conflict that drags other nations into war.

Speaking to Sky News Australia’s Andrew Bolt, the former special forces soldier described the Middle East as a “tinderbox” and spoke about the “very challenging” situation Israel is faced with.

The shadow defence minister said the world was facing a “very challenging” period over the coming weeks and months. Asked about the difficulty of the challenge Israel will face if they invade Gaza, the former army officer said the operation would be “very, very challenging for Israel” and they needed to be “very clear about who they’re up against.”

“We also finally need to be clear about the complexity that Israel is facing. It's not just Hamas, there's Hezbollah, there's Iran behind this. “And that's why it's important that friends like the US and Australia stand with Israel, and its right to self-defence.
