‘Might not make it’: Petracca opens up on ‘most traumatic’ experience of his life

Disgruntled Melbourne star Christian Petracca has revealed the horrifying moment doctors thought he “might not make it” as he lapsed into critical condition in the intensive care unit in hospital after suffering traumatic season-ending injuries.despite club assertions he would be held to the remaining five years of his seven-year contract, Petracca has opened up in a podcast interview about the impact of his injuries, revealing he’s seeing a “trauma psych” to help him.

“Even since then, the last 6-7 weeks have been really tough on both of us … she’s been amazing for me since I first met her but just through this experience … I’ve got insomnia, I feel like, to be honest, I can’t sleep because of stuff like that … I’m having to see a trauma psych to deal with what’s going on.”

“The surgery in general was a really traumatic experience: being awake for it, internal bleeding, wasn’t able to be put to sleep under anaesthetic. I can think of every single thing happening at that time … That was quite tough.” “For me, I think about it every day which is something I’ll eventually get over. So, mentally, I’m struggling a little bit, but I know that the work I put in mentally – with my mindfulness and meditation and surrounding myself with good people – no doubt I’ll be fine.
