Migrant women want the 'older generations' to listen to young people about forced marriage, saying more education is needed as federal police and governments tackle the issue.
Migrant women in the town of Mansfield in north-east Victoria are calling for education and awareness to tackle the issue of forced marriage in Australia.Experts are calling for more options besides criminalisation as the federal government consults on "civil mechanisms" to address the issue. When Victorian sisters Hamida and Fatemah Samar heard about the forced marriage and subsequent murder of 21-year-old Ruqia Haidari , it brought back traumatising memories.
"Forced marriage investigations require a different law enforcement approach and the response is often one of prevention and education."Ms Haidari's death and the conviction of her mother, who will serve at least 12 months in prison, has "triggered" many women who have escaped forced marriages themselves, according to community worker Betul Tuna.
Ms Tuna said helping women escape from forced marriage required highly sensitive work with their families. "We should educate the root of this which is the parents pushing their children what to do, what not to do, what to wear, where to go, where to not go."Forced marriage became a crime in Australia in 2013 but Laura Vidal, lecturer in social work at the University of Canberra, said criminalisation should not be the only option.Dr Vidal's research has found young women did not necessarily want anyone in their family to get into trouble, but wanted options for support.
