More than half of migrant women have been sexually harassed at work with their customers, co-workers and bosses among the biggest perpetrators, a new union survey has found.
A survey of more than 3,000 migrant women has found 51 per cent have experienced workplace sexual harassment .
Mark Morey, the secretary of Unions NSW, which surveyed more than 3,000 women, said there was a "culture of intimidation" in many Australian workplaces. "Migrant women on temporary visas are forced to endure sexual harassment in silence," the report stated.Women who tried to defend themselves, reject unwanted advances or report harassment faced repercussions including being fired, having their shifts cut, underpayment and bullying."Some of them told stories of fighting them off and fleeing, having to punch them in the head.
Customers, co-workers and direct supervisors or managers were the most common perpetrators of sexual harassment, the report found. "When sexual harassment occurred, they tried to persuade workers it wasn’t a big deal, just a common thing on farms." "The way men treat women in the hospitality industry here is disgusting. I, and all the female workers I have worked with, have been subjected to men staring at our body parts and saying gross sexual comments to us — asking us for sex or to remove clothing and making us uncomfortable with personal questions."found more than 40 per cent of women and 26 per cent of men had experienced workplace sexual harassment in the past five years.
