A survey of new migrants has found the majority find participating in Australia Day celebrations helps them feel welcome in their adopted country

Migrants who have been in Australia for less than three years believe it's important to celebrate Australia Day, but many don't grasp the significance of the date 26 January.

The majority of the 150 new migrants surveyed said they planned to learn more about the history of the date. “It’s our experience that almost without exception people who are newly arrived in Australia want to fit in and become part of the broader society,” Ms Scarth said.Record number of new citizens

“Australia Day is an opportunity to celebrate our success as a multicultural nation and reflect on what it means to be an Australia,” Mr Tudge said.
