Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley says it’s “important to get the balance right” on the migration of skilled workers, where they live, and what they do, otherwise it will put pressure on Australia’s housing crisis.
Australia is set to experience its biggest population surge within two years as 650,000 extra migrants are expected to arrive at the end of this financial year and next.
Ms Ley said people in rural Australia are “crying out for workforce” – however, they are also struggling with the lack of housing. She said the “lack of housing” is only adding to people not being able to get workers into business during a time that they need in a way that works for them.“What we don’t want is every single one of these migrants landing in our capital cities because the pressure on housing and services there will be huge.”
