We chat with SolarOpposites producers MikeMcMahanTM, Josh Bycel, and danielleu about their Halloween Special on hulu, TV holiday traditions, and more:
Even aliens enjoy the spookiest time of the year, as proven by A Solar Opposites Halloween Special. The latest holiday episode from the hit Hulu show sees Korvo grappling with his fear of the October season while Jesse and Terry try to make their house the best Halloween spot on the block and Yumyulack dies and goes to Hell.
Mike McMahan: When we originally were picked up, it was only for eight-episode seasons, and then there was a season that we wrote so fast and furiously that we called Hulu, and we were like, "Can we just do a holiday special too?" That's where the Christmas special came from, and then after that, they started picking us up for 12-episode seasons, knowing that we like to write specials, because part of Solar is TV writers getting to make fun of writing TV in a bit of a way.
Mike McMahan: Coney Island, that does like huge, starting in September, walkthroughs. My kids love Halloween and I love Halloween, and we wanted to be the opposite of the Peanuts Halloween Special. There you go, that's the only major difference. And that's the thing I love about this show, you guys always draw in some of the most awesome voice actors.
Mike McMahan: That was once you've heard that many pun jokes, throwing in one that even Korvo is like, "Wait a minute, are you doing lyrics now?" [Laughs] Breaking your own game a little bit is always fun.
