Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says mining giant Rio Tinto is set to receive a “shocking” compensation package for the temporary coal price caps put in place to lower energy prices.

The Queensland and federal government will split the costs under the agreement in relation to the Gladstone power plant.

“Which is just clearly ridiculous, why would you as taxpayers be bailing out a multinational company to the tune of potentially, we’re told in this story, may be up to $750 million.”
