Latest UK politics news as minister claims Met Police ‘did pretty good job’ over coronation arrests
Supporters of the Republic pressure group protest against the coronation on the edge of Trafalgar Square at the top of Whitehall on May 6. Health minister Neil O’Brien has claimed that the police “did a pretty good job” at the King’s coronation over the weekend. To carry out the arrests, the Metropolitan police used the controversial Public Order Act, which was given Royal Assent four days before the coronation.
However, it later emerged that police did not have grounds to make the detentions, and they have personally apologised to Graham Smith, chief executive of anti-monarchy group Republic, who was one of those arrested.
