The shock resignations by Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid have torpedoed the embattled British PM’s leadership.
| Two of Britain’s top cabinet ministers have quit, sending a shockwave through Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s embattled leadership that could spell the beginning of the end for his tenure in Downing Street.
It appears to have been the last straw for Mr Sunak and Mr Javid, who are close political allies, and who harbour ambitions to lead the Conservative Party. Mr Johnson gave a brief televised interview where he apologised for appointing Mr Pincher to a ministerial role as a parliamentary enforcer. But by then the focus had swung away from that issue to the ministerial walkout.
Mr Sunak is a fiscal conservative, and has pushed back against Mr Johnson’s instinct to lavishly dole out public funds. Mr Johnson’s popularity has plummeted since the revelations began emerging late last year of illegal social gatherings in his Downing Street office and home during the strict COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.He received a police fine in April, but appeared to have survived the surge in public antipathy. Eventually, his MPs forced a leadership spill at the start of June, which he won by 211 MPs to 148 - a narrower victory than expected.
