The cashless gaming trial is not proving much of a test.

There are worrying indications that the prospect of introducing cashless gaming on NSW’s 110,090 poker machines is wavering as numbers of venues and people taking part in a trial have shrivelled, leaving industry members to question the validity of the study.

Minns subsequently added Labor’s take, vowing to reduce the number of machines and ban political donations from clubs with gaming operations, but refused to make all poker machines cashless by 2028 as recommended by the NSW Crime Commission. Instead, he set up an independent panel to oversee a trial of cashless gaming cards.

in September revealing more than half of the 27 original venues had withdrawn. Of 243 people who signed up, only 32 active users remained. Aristocrat also pulled out of the trial to develop its own cashless technology.
