The minor premiership door is wide open for the Broncos - but that will be the least of Ivan Cleary’s concerns with doubt over whether his star five-eighth will play again this season.
Ivan Cleary fears Penrith’s star five-eighth Jarome Luai will miss the rest of the season after he dislocated his shoulder in a shock 32-18 loss to the Eels which put a huge dent in the Panthers’ minor premiership ambitions.
“It’s obviously a decent injury, but they are fairly positive about the potential of it,” Cleary said. “But really we won’t know anymore until [Friday]. Maika Sivo bagged a first-half hat-trick and finished with four tries for the Eels, who despite being without the injured Mitchell Moses, powered to a 22-4 half-time lead against an uncharacteristically error-strewn Panthers.Chasing a third JJ Giltinan Shield in the last four years, the Panthers have left the minor premiership door open for the Broncos, who need to beat the Raiders and Storm in their last two games to cap a remarkable turnaround under Kevin Walters.
Already sporting heavy bandages around his left knee, Gutherson tried to play on as Nathan Cleary scooped up a short dropout to score untouched before the Eels No.1 surrendered to the inevitable.
