Rounding up the action at the Padres’ minor league affiliates
Jay Groome couldn’t get out of the second inning and Triple-A El Paso’s offense, days after losing Brandon Dixon to a big-league call-up, couldn’t get much going in aThe 24-year-old Groome, acquired at the deadline in the Eric Hosmer dump-off, allowed four runs – three earned – in the second inning. He struck out two before Jake Hager’s two-run homer opened up a 4-0 lead and chased him from the game.
Groome was 3-2 with a 3.16 ERA, 44 strikeouts and a 1.38 WHIP in 10 starts since the trade to the Padres.Right-hander Reiss Knehr allowed a run in the sixth inning and left-hander Jorge Castillo allowed a run in the seventh. Second baseman C.J. Hinojosa went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and designated hitter Tirso Ornelas went 1-for-4 with an RBI single.
First baseman Kyle Martin went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored and catcher Brett Sullivan went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.Reno will play in the Triple-A National Championship Game on Sunday.
