Down their biggest piece, Houston Christian boys top Shadow Creek
Houston Christian didn’t have its best player, 6-10 center C.J. Barnes, and coach Ron Crandall said the Mustangs didn’t play their best game. The junior forward stepped up with 24 points and 10 rebounds while Barnes, a Colorado Christian commit, was out sick, leading Houston Christian to a 67-53 victory over Shadow Creek on Tuesday night at home.
“We’ve won without our full complement of players,” Crandall said. “We beat a really good Clear Falls team early on, and we had a great game here against Bush when we didn’t have all of our guys.Houston Christian, the No. 1 team in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches TAPPS 6A/SPC 4A rankings, improved to 10-1. Shadow Creek dropped to 5-5.
The Mustangs led by as much as nine, 31-22, in the first half by crashing the boards. They outrebounded Shadow Creek 24-11 in the first half and 39-29 for the game — without their top big man in the middle. “We’ve taken pride in that being our No. 1 focus as a team this year,” Crandall said. “We’ve got a really good rebounding team.”
Shadow Creek pulled within 31-25 at halftime, but Houston Christian pushed the pace early in the second half behind sophomore point guard Montana Wheeler, who had six points and five assists. He helped on a Christopher Adlam 3-pointer from the corner, Chance Thalmann followed with a 3, and Wheeler added a transition layup during a 10-0 run in the third quarter that put Houston Christian ahead 41-27.
