American football legend and LGBTI+ activist Megan Rapinoe has slammed the Spanish football federation for having a “deep level of misogyny and sexism”.
Spain recently lifted the FIFA Women’s World Cup but the celebrations were shrouded in controversy when midfielder Jennifer Hermoso was hugged and kissed on the lips by Spanish RFEF president Luis Rubiales as the side received their gold medals.
Rapinoe is a staunch advocate for equal pay in the men’s and women’s game and said the kiss “made me think about how much we are required to endure”. The Spanish RFEF president had initially refused to apologise for the kiss labelling the criticism “idiocy” but later backflipped on the stance acknowledging it had “somewhat tarnished" the celebration.
