"The Australian government is providing consular assistance to the families of two Australian crew members on board a cargo vessel reported missing in Japanese waters," a DFAT spokesperson told SBS News on Thursday.The Gulf Livestock 1 ship is missing off the coast of Japan after strong winds from typhoon Maysak lashed the region.
An industry source told AAP the shipment was a New Zealand consignment which would fall under their regulatory authorities. Japan's coastguard said it rescued 45-year-old chief officer Sareno Edvarodo on Wednesday night while searching for the ship.According to Mr Edvarodo, the vessel lost an engine before it was hit by a wave and capsized, a coastguard spokeswoman said.
