Grizzlies baseball squad benefits from switch

From Tee-ball to just before high school, Matthew Delvecchio was a pitcher and twin brother Cody roamed the infield and outfield.Hard-throwing Cody is one of the county’s top pitchers. With a fastball that sits at 92 mph and has touched 94, Cody is 2-0 with save and a 1.46 ERA.

Matthew, a middle infielder early in high school, has moved to third to help the team. He hit .349 last season and is hitting .352 this season with a trio of two-hit games for the 6-3 Grizzlies.“Everyone talks about Cody, and rightfully so,” said Mission Hills coach Neil Jamison. “Every time he pitches, we have a good chance of winning.

“Absolutely, we take pride in being baseball guys,” Matthew said. “Cody and I are at Dylan’s game every chance we get, especially when he’s pitching. And when he has a break, he’s here watching us.” Gordon Sanchez was a catcher who went to a College World Series while at Long Beach State and was drafted in the 19th round by the Yankees.
