Many questions remain after two coastal Mississippi police officers were shot and killed while responding to a welfare check. Authorities say the shooter was a veterinarian who worked in Mississippi and Alabama. She was found dead at the scene.

Amy Anderson was sitting in an SUV in the parking lot of a Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis in the early morning hours Wednesday with a young child in the vehicle with her when two police officers arrived, checking on her and the child after receiving a call regarding their welfare.

Anderson was also found dead at the scene, still inside the vehicle with a bullet wound to the chest. Investigators have determined one of the officers was able to discharge his weapon during the shooting and an autopsy will establish whether the officer killed Anderson by returning fire or she committed suicide.

She had been working at Lakeview Animal Hospital in D’Iberville since October, as well as serving as an Emergency Veterinarian for MedVet in Mobile, Ala. She previously worked at Animal Hospital of Orange Grove in Gulfport, according to her Facebook profile.
