In a sign of Latrell Mitchell’s frame of mind and his commitment to South Sydney, the 26-year-old is weighing up his immediate representative future.
South Sydney superstar Latrell Mitchell is considering making himself unavailable for the start of this year’s State of Origin series to focus on helping the Rabbitohs off the bottom of the NRL ladder.
The Rabbitohs sit at the bottom of the ladder with one win after eight rounds and have the worst defensive record in the competition. Mitchell will return to the NRL from suspension 16 days before NSW Blues coach Michael Maguire selects his team for the first game of the 2024 series. In the aftermath of Mitchell’s suspension for the incident against the Warriors, he made a pledge to chief executive Blake Solly and Demetriou to repay the club.It wouldn’t be the first time Mitchell has withdrawn from Origin. In 2022, he made himself unavailable for game three of the series after returning from a 12-week lay-off from a hamstring injury.
“They’ve got a real good team there, NSW, and good luck to them and Burton in the centres. Give Crichton a go too ... I really want to focus on South Sydney and getting myself right for the backend of the season.” At a recent State of Origin promotional event, Maguire was asked about Mitchell’s potential selection.
