The Saskatchewan Roughriders held their first official outdoor practice of the season Friday, on a cool day with a few fireworks.
“It’s cold. In May. That’s not right,” Saskatchewan Roughriders’ receiver Duke Williams said with a laugh following the team’s first outdoor training-camp session of 2022 — one preceded by a short-lived players strike that delayed the camp opening.
“I’m happy to be back with my brothers, and kick the season off right. It started today,” Williams said. “The road to the Grey Cup started today.” In the meantime, they played the game — back in the pro-football flow, running and cutting for coaches, trying to put down good film and do enough to stick around long enough for the weather to turn hot.
It was a welcome little show for fans who watched from the stadium stands: Cody Fajardo hitting Kian Schaffer-Baker with a sideline toss; Godfrey Onyeka picking off a pass during a drill; routes and hollers, stretches and line work, all the sights and sounds of a football team on the go.
