MLB has informed club officials it will encourage umpires to refocus on the use of “sticky stuff” this season, sources tell jaysonst. Here’s what could happen, including inspections in the middle of an inning and checking pitchers’ caps, gloves & belts.
As that chart demonstrates, the original crackdown was highly effective in reducing spin rates, leveling off the strikeout rate and getting more balls in play. Since then, spin rates haven’t quite returned to their pre-crackdown rates. But their continued rise has attracted MLB’s attention, particularly at a time when the league is introducing a flurry of new rules, largely designed to get more balls in play.
So will this “refocus” initiative accomplish its mission? Remember that the inspection of pitchers’ hands last year was implemented with the same goal. Instead, spin rates rose, and there wasn’t a single ejection of any pitcher all season. But will a return to cap and glove checks, plus the threat of mid-inning inspections, get pitchers’ attention?
