The St. Louis Cardinals have secured the National League Central crown for the first time since 2015
By Jared Diamond Sept. 29, 2019 6:36 pm ET It took until the final day of the regular season, but the St. Louis Cardinals secured the National League Central crown for the first time since 2015. Their 9-0 rout of the Chicago Cubs on Sunday officially clinched the division title, ensuring that the Cardinals would stave off the surging Milwaukee Brewers and avoid a tiebreaker Monday.
But heading into Sunday’s finale, the Cardinals just had to win to clinch the division title and that is what they did, finishing the season with 91 wins, two games ahead of Milwaukee after the Brewers lost 4-3 to the Rockies in 13 innings. The American League playoff field was already set before Sunday. The Houston Astros, who own home-field advantage through the World Series by virtue of their MLB-best record of 107-55, will play the winner of Wednesday’s wild-card matchup between the Tampa Bay Rays and Oakland Athletics. The New York Yankees will play the Minnesota Twins in the other best-of-five ALDS.
Maddon guided the Cubs to the playoffs in his first four seasons at the helm, including three NL championship appearances and the franchise’s first World Series championship since 1908 in 2016.
