Police have issued more than 46,000 fines in six months to Adelaide drivers caught using mobile phones and are 'disappointed' at the number of repeat offenders – including one driver detected 41 times.

The number of drivers being caught by mobile phone detection cameras is declining, but police say the numbers are still disappointing.Hundreds of drivers are still being repeatedly caught on camera using their mobile phones while behind the wheel — some dozens of times, SA Police say.

SA Police Minister Stephen Mullighan said the drop in detections at the five camera locations was about 86 per cent but the number caught was "far beyond our expectations". "By the time we got to the end of that grace period in September last year and we started issuing fines, that had fallen to approximately 350 drivers per day, so a really significant impact we've had on driver behaviour.""That is still 200 drivers that are choosing to take their eyes off the road, away from the task of driving, and instead look at their mobile phones," he said.
