Mobile phone detection cameras are being turned on in five locations across Adelaide roads on Wednesday, as police crack down on unsafe driving. South Australia Police said there is a three-month grace period during which drivers caught with a mobile phone will receive a warning letter. From September 19, offending drivers will cop a $639 fine and three demerit points.
South Australia Police said fines will be reviewed by a staff member to ensure the correct car was identified. Superintendent Darren Fielke said using a mobile phone while driving increased the risk of a crash four times. “Our message to drivers is simple — leave your phone alone while driving,” Fielke said. “We all need to break the habit of reaching for our phone every time it rings, beeps, or pings.
