Education Secretary Gillian Keegan will set out the ban during her speech at Monday's Conservative Conference

Mobile phones will be banned in classrooms under new government rules, the Education Secretary will announce today .

Gillian Keegan will set out plans to ban mobile phones from classrooms in England during the Conservative Party conference in Manchester. A source told the Daily Mail she believes the devices “pose a serious challenge in terms of distraction, disruptive behaviour and bullying”. Children won't be allowed to use their devices on breaks or in classrooms under the new rules, however they will be allowed them to and from school.Headteachers are already encouraged to limit phone usage and many schools have restrictions in place, including requiring pupils to hand their phones in each morning. But government sources say they are confident expanding the guidance will make a difference in reducing the use of phones during the school day.

A government source told the Mail: “It is one of the biggest issues that children and teachers have to grapple with so she will set out a way forward to empower teachers to ban mobiles from classrooms.”Two years ago, then-education secretary Sir Gavin Williamson pledged to make the school day 'mobile-free', however the proposed ban was scrapped by his successor, Nadhim Zahawi, early last year.

China and France have already put nationwide bans on phones in schools into force, with the Netherland set to follow suit in 2024. There are no blanket bans in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, which have devolved powers over schools.
