Modern Family almost cast a major sitcom star as Phil Dunphy and, although the actor is popular, this mistake would have ruined the family comedy.
While the original cast of Modern Family included a very famous sitcom star as Phil Dunphy, the actor was right to turn down the role that he was offered. Casting is everything when it comes to creating a successful sitcom. While other television genres can rely on impressive action, fast-paced plotting, or complex character studies to keep viewers invested, the cozy, familiar tone of sitcoms only works if the cast has great chemistry and each performer is perfect for their role.

Matt LeBlanc Playing Modern Family's Phil Doesn't Work Friends star Matt LeBlanc admitted that he turned down the role of Phil Dunphy in Modern Family during a 2017 USA Today interview. While it must have been tough to turn down a project that LeBlanc called “a really good script,” it was the right call. LeBlanc’s performance as Friends hero Joey was still ingrained in the public consciousness when Modern Family debuted in 2009 and would have overwhelmed Phil's character.
Even Matt LeBlanc Knew Matt LeBlanc Wasn't Right For Modern Family LeBlanc turned down Modern Family as he felt he couldn’t do the project justice, and he had a feeling that the part of Phil Dunphy was written for another actor. His suspicions were correct, as the creators of Modern Family wanted Ty Burrell for the role. However, the network wanted to find a more famous face for the part, even though LeBlanc was a bad fit.
Much of Phil’s appeal in Modern Family comes down to the good-natured character’s cringe-worthy attempts to relate to his teenage children. LeBlanc wouldn’t have been right for Phil’s awkward, goofy “peerenting,” while another actor that the creators pursued was even less suited to the part. The creators of Modern Family also approached Rob Huebel , who is great at playing sleaze bags and comically dumb side characters but who doesn’t generally take on wholesome roles.
