In the four years since Williams stepped into the job, he has 194 regular season wins plus three playoff appearances including a trip to the NBA Finals. There have been only 115 regular season losses in that time.He’s done great by Devin Booker, but I think Book was going to be Book, with or without Williams.
What a coach can’t do is take a 6-foot-3 player who has those traits and train him to be 7-feet tall. That brings up the issue of a replacement. Let’s start with the three available NBA champions: Mike Budenholzer, Frank Vogel andI don’t think any of them are clear upgrades over Williams. Yes, Budenholzer beat Williams in the NBA Finals, but that was because Dario Saric got hurt and the referees seemingly gave Milwaukee every foul call. Vogel is a possibility, but I think he won a Bubble championship with LeBron James and Anthony Davis playing at their peak.
If anyone could teach Ayton how to be mean, it’s Laimbeer. Laimbeer was willing to knock Michael Jordan flat on his backside, so imagine what he could teach Ayton about how to deal with Luka Doncic, LeBron James or any other ballhandler looking for an easy layup.
