The Moomba Festival’s Birdman Rally raises big funds for charity with small jumps. 9News

Sixteen quirky competitors have donned their most extravagant flying gear to compete in Melbourne Moomba Festival’s Birdman Rally.

Cartoon characters, superheroes and even a man dressed as a house made an appearance at Birrarung Marr on the Yarra River this morning, and gave it their all as they took off from the starting platform into the chilly depths of the river, all in the name of charity. One of this year’s more creative teams, 'Up and Away', came dressed as characters from the Disney Pixar movie 'Up!' and team captain Todd told 9News it was his second year competing.Team Up and Away missed out on the grand prize, but raised valuable funds for their charity, Property Industry Foundation, who build houses to help support victims of youth homelessness.

Mark Rees won first place with a jump of seven metres, fundraising $16,000 in the process. “I jumped my little seven metres,” Mr Rees said. This year’s monarch, Archie Thompson, also gave the jump a crack, and is now planning on improving his technique.
