Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says Moon Knight will be 'brutal' and mark a 'tonal shift' in the MCU.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige says Moon Knight won't be pulling any punches and that the upcoming series will mark a brutal tonal shift for the MCU. The new Marvel limited series is the next live-action show to be released on Disney+ in the MCU's Phase Four, following quickly after Hawkeye, which was released in December 2021. Moon Knight is set to premiere on March 30 with 6 episodes making up the limited run.

Moon Knight will introduce its titular character, a vigilante with ties to the Egyptian god Khonshu and an alternate personality of mercenary Marc Spector. Oscar Isaac stars as the lesser-known Marvel hero suffering from disassociative identity disorder, and the rest of Moon Knight's cast includes Ethan Hawke as cult leader Arthur Harrow, Lucy Thackeray as a coworker of Spector's British personality Stephen Grant, and May Calamawy in an unknown role.

“He’s brutal. It’s been fun to work with Disney+ and see the boundaries shifting on what we’re able to do. There are moments [in the series] when Moon Knight is wailing on another character, and it is loud and brutal, and the knee-jerk reaction is, ‘We’re gonna pull back on this, right?’ No. We’re not pulling back. There’s a tonal shift. This is a different thing. This is Moon Knight.”

From the release of the MCU's first live-action show on Disney+ in 2021, it has become clear that the streaming platform has given Marvel more room to experiment with its stories and genres, as the critically-acclaimed WandaVision demonstrates with its combination of classic sitcom styles and sci-fi action. Moon Knight will push the MCU's boundaries even further with its brutal depictions of violence.

What Feige and Marvel's other promotional releases for Moon Knight don't say is how the series will handle Spector's superhero origins. While the Moon Knight trailer released in January shows Oscar Isaac transforming into the vigilante, for most of the trailer he appears as Spector's other identity Stephen Grant, so it can be assumed that his origin story may differ from the comics.
