The opportunity to network and enjoy social activities are driving a trend away from working from home.

And in a surprise finding, Friday is one of the preferred days for workers to commute and join colleagues in an office setting.

These are some of the results from the University of Sydney's Transport Opinion Survey, which surveyed 1029 people for their views about transport.More people are returning to offices across Australia, a new survey found. On average, Australian workers spent only 21 per cent, or between one and two days, of their work week at home during a two-week survey period in September. The latter part of the working week is becoming less popular for working from home, the research found.David Hensher, director of the university's Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies, said professionals and sales people were driving the return to the office.

"We think they're nervously still recovering from the lockdowns, which they had for much longer," he said. The return to the office has been marked by a corresponding rise in online shopping, with 78 per cent of Australians purchasing online items over the past two weeks, compared with 70 per cent in March.
