Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordon Flake says there is “more behind the scenes” in China’s decision to drop barley import restrictions for Australia as the World Trade Organisation informed countries Australia was “likely” to win the case.
“China clearly didn’t want that embarrassing decision and the World Trade Organisation go against it publicly,” Mr Flake told Sky News Australia.“China took actions three years ago that were in clear violation of the World Trade Organisation rules – Australian barley farmers paid that price.
“I appreciate quiet diplomacy but we’re looking at a situation where China will be able to quietly back down and yet face no penalty for its actions.”
