In the streets of Taipei, people appeared sanguine as they went about their daily lives, but then the Taiwanese are used to looming threats from their gigantic neighbour.
| Taiwanese citizens awoke on Thursday to the news that China was conducting military drills around the island nation, a threatening move that comes just days after the population celebrated the inauguration of the sixth democratically elected president.
People sit in a cafe as a news broadcast shows China announcing new military drills around Taiwan, in Keelung, Taiwan.“It was worse before when Pelosi came,” Erin Liu, 28, who works in a coffee shop in the Zhongshan district, said. “I’m not too worried today, but I can say I’m sometimes worried about China.”
But within days, thousands more Taiwanese were forced to exercise their democratic rights. In another torrential downpour, they gathered outside Parliament House to protest against a controversial bill. For all the fanfare around the new president, Taiwan’s democracy is fragile and remains under threat.
“Every day they are getting closer in the air and the sea, and we all know it,” he said. “It is intimidation, but we are quite used to it.”
