Australian TV productions will be getting a boost in next week's federal budget, and while $50 million in new funding sounds like good news for the struggling arts sector, it's not quite as clear cut as that.
Screen Australia is getting an extra $30 million over the next two years to support Australian documentaries and dramas. They could invest in lots of new programs, or choose to invest larger amounts of money in a select number of higher quality programs. But some in the sector are concerned it will mean commercial television networks will make less children's content, given it is usually more expensive to make and attracts fewer viewers compared to documentaries.
It's complicated. Streaming services don't have a linear broadcast schedule like television stations, so it is not possible to impose the same 55 per cent local content quota on them.
