ACT independent senator David Pocock has taken up the cause of small and micro business owners who find working from home voids their home and contents insurance.

several people have come forward about immediate cancellations of their policiesSenator Pocock said the emerging issue had the potential to impact thousands of small and micro businesses across the country, and he wanted to help find a solution.

Insurance is regulated federally, and Senator Pocock is calling on the Albanese government to address the issue as a matter of urgency. Senator Pocock decided to take up the cause after receiving a letter from Canberra independent filmmaker Steve Cooke, who had his Allianz home and contents insurance policy cancelled after he disclosed that he ran his small business from his home in the southern suburb of Farrer.

The retired police officer turned to filmmaking five years ago after PTSD prompted him to pursue a different path in life. Under Mr Cooke's new insurance policy, he is restricted to only film editing in his home and storing his equipment there. "Be prepared for them to say your insurance is cancelled, because that's what happened to me, and I wasn't prepared for that," he said.
