Forecasters say areas of New Jersey that got pounded by heavy rain last weekend could get hit again on Tuesday and Thursday, with flash flooding possible

The forecast is looking gloomy after that, however, with the potential for more thunderstorms and heavy rain on Tuesday and again on Thursday.

“We do have some chances of rain on Tuesday, with greater chances farther north, and we are seeing an indication of the potential for heavy rain in some of these thunderstorms,” said Amanda Lee, a meteorologist at theWeather Prediction Center , an agency affiliated with the National Weather Service, is calling for a “marginal risk” of excessive rainfall and possible flash flooding for most areas of the Garden State on Tuesday, when a cold front will be moving across the region in the afternoon and evening. There’s a “slight risk” of excessive rainfall in northeastern and central sections of the state.

A marginal risk is considered low, the first of four levels on the severity scale used by the Weather Prediction Center. And a slight risk is elevated to the second level. With more rain showers and thunderstorms expected Thursday, forecasters say there’s a slight risk of excessive rainfall in the state’s northwestern region — the area that got hit the hardest with torrential rain and heavy flooding on Saturday and early Sunday.
