Some showers are forecast to develop as early as Monday afternoon as a low-pressure system drops out of the Gulf of Alaska, traversing the Pacific Northwest and settling just off the coast of Central California, said Roger Gass, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, on Sunday.
“Initially, it’s going to be rather isolated and light. As far as precipitation goes, a few hundredths of an inch, maybe a tenth of an inch with the heavier rain showers that do develop,” Gass said.coverage increases by Tuesday afternoon as the storm system moves toward the San Francisco Bay Area coastline — and a 20% to 25% chance of thunderstorms is “definitely in the cards” across most of the region, Gass said.
“Given the very cold air mass aloft, it is going to be unstable and gives us that potential for small hail to be accompanied by any stronger thunderstorm or heavy shower,” Gass noted. “I’ll add that this could bring some snowfall to the highest elevations of the region, mostly along the higher peaks of the Big Sur coast down south of Monterey and not so much in the Bay Area.”
