New CDC data showed 35% or more of residents in 16 states were considered obese in 2020, an increase from a dozen the year prior and nine in 2018. Overall, more than 20% of adults in all states and U.S. territories had obesity.

Fatima Cody Stanford said she expected the level of stress experienced by many during the pandemic, as well changes in activity levels and eating habits, to contribute to a change in weight status.

The disease isn’t solely based on personal choices, she noted. The likelihood of someone having obesity if their parents had it is between 50% and 85%. “Weight is more heritable than height,” Dr. Stanford said. “We will need to acknowledge existing health disparities and health inequities and address the social determinants of health such as poverty and lack of healthcare access if we are to ensure health equity,” the CDC said in its report Wednesday.
