More than 100 people are dead and almost 20 others are still missing after a boat — being used as an illegal ferry — sank off the northern coast of Mozambique, President Filipe Nyusi said. The vessel carrying 130 passengers was an overloaded fishing boat and was not licensed to transport people, an official from the country’s Maritime Transport Institute said. It was ferrying people from Lunga in Nampula province to Mozambique Island on Sunday, INTRASMAR administrator Lourenco Machado said.
Maritime authorities continued to search for survivors but “it is not easy to say with precision how many remain missing,” administrator Silverio Nauaito told state-run Radio Mozambique. Nyusi said he was saddened by the tragedy and directed the southern African nation’s transport minister to investigate. “The Mozambican government will meet tomorrow to assess the situation and take necessary measures to minimise the impact of this incident,” his office said.
