Researchers fear that due to the high proportion of MPs and Lords with additional property portfolios, tensions may arise between their public duties and their own private interests.

In addition, at least 204 members of the House of Lords are understood to own a total of 351 additional properties. But less information was made available about these, so researchers were unable to estimate the total value of these properties.

Labour Lords and peers had a significantly lower proportion of property interests, with just 23 per cent . Transparency International UK is calling for the Government to provide greater transparency in financial interests and make it easier for the public to access the information. It comes as MPs prepare to scrutinise the Renters’ Reform Bill, which aims to improve the rights of private tenants by scrapping section 21 “no-fault” evictions, create a register of landlords and introduce a private rented ombudsman to help enforce renters’ rights.
