Hundreds of thousands of households are being told to boil their water after fatal storms caused widespread damage to parts of Victoria yesterday including water infrastructure.

"We've become aware of a potential water quality issue affecting 88 suburbs due to electrical damage caused by storms overnight," Yarra Valley Water said on its Facebook page.
