More than 80 men accused of the gang rapes of eight women and the armed robbery of a video production crew have appeared in court in Johannesburg, South Africa.Local residents blame the gangs, known as "zama-zamas", for widespread crimeAs the hearing took place on Monday, a 300-strong crowd gathered outside Krugersdorp Magistrates Court to express their fury.

The suspects are allegedly illegal miners known as "zama-zamas", who dig for gold in the region's many closed mine shafts. "They have not been taking us seriously. And it had to take this kind of crime to happen for us to be able to put the issues of illegal immigration on the map," protester Lerato Ngobeni said.Another demonstrator, David Makgaka, called on the South African National Defence Force to be deployed, and said local police had failed.
