Service on Saturday received reports of more than two dozen waterspouts on Lake Erie.

In this photo, taken Saturday from a lounge on the top-floor of a Cleveland Clinic main-campus building, at least two waterspouts can be seen over the lake. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The National Service received reports of more than two dozen waterspouts on Lake Erie Saturday morning.

“This is an impressive number we’ve seen on the lake,” NWS Cleveland meteorologist Marty Mullen said. “It’s hard to say if it’s a record, but it’s definitely one of the higher numbers we’ve seen on Lake Erie ever.”Waterspouts can happen at any time of the year, but waterspout season starts in mid to late August and ends typically near the end of October, Mullen said.

Waterspouts typically form when cold air moves across the Great Lakes, which have reached their warmest levels of the year, and result in “large temperature differences between the warm water and the overriding cold air,” NWS says.Tornadic waterspouts generally begin as true tornadoes over land during a thunderstorm, then they move out over the water. This type of waterspout can be large and destructive.

Typically, fair weather waterspouts remain over the water and dissipate when they reach the shoreline. In the rare occasion when they hit land, they would be considered a tornado, Mullen said. Observers on shore should remain cautious, he advises. On the water is where things get dicey. Waterspouts are powerful enough to capsize boats and can travel at speeds of about 12 to 17 mph.
