The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report says the climate change outlook has worsened, but there is a path to cut carbon emissions.

Countries will need to make “deep, rapid and sustained” greenhouse gas emission reductions this decade to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, according to the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.– including limiting temperatures rises to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels – the IPCC’s report warned emissions will need to be cut by almost half by 2030 to achieve that goal.

“This synthesis report underscores the urgency of taking more ambitious action and shows that, if we act now, we can still secure a liveable sustainable future for all,” he said. It found that up to 3.6 billion people lived in regions considered highly vulnerable to climate change. The IPCC modelling found that, despite countries introducing stronger emission reduction targets, it was highly likely global warming would exceed 1.5 degrees by 2030, making it harder to limit global warming to below 2 degrees by the end of the century.

“Overshooting 1.5 degrees will result in irreversible adverse impacts on certain ecosystems with low resilience, such as polar, mountain, and coastal ecosystems, impacted by ice-sheet, glacier melt, or by accelerating and higher committed sea level rise,” it said. “The good news is there is lots of action already under way, and lots of opportunities for action. We know what needs to be done, and we have the technology,” he said.

“The central message from climate scientists is unmistakable: governments must rally to drastically cut emissions and cease the extraction and burning of fossil fuels this decade,” Dr Bradshaw said.
