Larger text size Very large text size Victoria's energy consumer watchdog has lashed power companies for cutting off a record number of households in the face of rising prices. In a highly critical report to be released on Tuesday, the Essential Services Commission accused energy retailers of running ineffectual hardship programs that saw customers cut off anyway in most cases. More Victorians are entering hardship programs with greater levels of debt.
The report comes as the Victorian government brings in a suite of energy reforms to drive down power prices, including a regulated, non-discounted default power price, mirroring the efforts of the federal government's 'big stick' electricity legislation. The federal government's regulated power price is expected to save households in other states more than $100 a year on power bills, and will cut into energy companies' bottom lines.
