Comment: Morrison can continue to divide and occasionally conquer but he'll miss his big opportunity | mrseankelly

But about the week to come, he was prophetic – almost. It has not felt as though the country itself is coming apart. Australians, I suspect, remain in this together, as much as we can when our experiences vary so widely. Our leaders, on the other hand, have descended into what looks, to most of us, like childish squabbling.

I suspect the Prime Minister has misjudged this. During the bushfires we all spoke of skies turning red, but looking at pictures from California this week I remembered: it is the whole world that changes colour. Your entire experience becomes contained within this single phenomenon. There is a kind of constant sadness, there is no relief, and nobody not there really understands.

There is a risk here that Morrison doesn’t appear to have grasped. Much of the political discussion right now revolves around comparisons: is this leader worse than this one, who is more secretive, who is more arrogant? Andrews has lately lost ground in these comparisons, for good reason. But it doesn’t follow that Morrison benefits.

This is part of the reason Anthony Albanese has now begun to talk about "the Morrison recession". He’s not so crazy-brave as to think he can deny reality: in the same speech, he described "the Morrison recession sparked by the coronavirus pandemic". In the short-term, it’s a weight of sorts against the government’s implication that this is the Andrews recession. It is an attempt to remind voters of whose job it is to fix things. Mostly, it’s a long-term bet.

The main element the government has so far hinted at is bringing forward a tax-cut package. In a sense, this is minor: the cuts have already been legislated. Certainly it lacks imagination. But bringing them forward will cement them. Until now, opponents have had hope they might somehow never happen – after all, there’s another election before they kick in. That’s part of the reason they’ve never received as much attention as they deserve.
