Opinion: Morrison government’s grants analysis reveals a system for taxpayers that must change | CroweDM
examines a broader range of programs and looks at every grant by electorate – the first time this has been done at a systemic level using the government’s own data, which only goes back to the start of 2018.
The total numbers also hide important details. Two Labor electorates, Lyons in Tasmania and Corangamite in Victoria, received generous funding of $58.5 million and $55.2 million respectively. This was 21 per cent of all the money that went to Labor seats and it was more than some Liberal seats gained. Why? Corangamite and Lyons were two of Morrison’s prime targets at the last election. They were marginal and that is what counted.
Voters could shrug this off when the grants were counted in thousands of dollars, but the Coalition set up funds worth more thanbefore the last election. That is enough to build a city freeway. This matters in a Parliament where governments are being decided by one or two seats.
