Dr Cameron Webb from NSW Health Pathology and the University of Sydney warns that a significant mosquito population is emerging from both freshwater and saltwater wetlands, with numbers expected to persist through the Easter holidays.

While many mosquitoes are merely a nuisance, there is still a risk of diseases such as Ross River virus, Japanese encephalitis, Murray Valley encephalitis, and Kunjin virus, which can lead to severe health issues, including neurological damage. Female mosquitoes require a blood meal to lay eggs, using specialized equipment to extract blood, which they process to nourish their eggs. The salt marsh mosquito, known for its wide-ranging travels, is one of the species implicated in spreading Ross River virus
