Warm weather and heavy rain are perfect for mosquito breeding, leading to a surge in their population. Expert Dr Cameron Webb warns of a prolonged season with potential health risks from mosquito-borne diseases like Ross River virus.
The onset of warm weather and heavy rainfall has created ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed, heralding a peak period for these pests across several regions. Dr Cameron Webb from NSW Health Pathology and the University of Sydney warns that a significant mosquito population is emerging from both freshwater and saltwater wetlands, with numbers expected to persist through the Easter holidays.
While many mosquitoes are merely a nuisance, there is still a risk of diseases such as Ross River virus, Japanese encephalitis, Murray Valley encephalitis, and Kunjin virus, which can lead to severe health issues, including neurological damage. Female mosquitoes require a blood meal to lay eggs, using specialized equipment to extract blood, which they process to nourish their eggs. The salt marsh mosquito, known for its wide-ranging travels, is one of the species implicated in spreading Ross River virus
